Inviting a serene sense of silence and stillness into a room
Katya approaches her work as a maker or designer. Her works are functional pieces like a low table, or something more spatial like a room divider. The sculpture series are merely exercises, and not end products. Katya starts with research, mostly on the history of the object to understand the cultural story and meaning. This time spent is as important for her than the making itself.
She works with elemental, older materials. In one series she uses thousand-year-old bogwood, and in another granite, marble, or brass. These materials are chosen for their history and meaning in design and architecture.
She often relies on the use of archetypal geometries—favouring cubes, forms and rhythms that feel inherently familiar, as if part of our collective consciousness.
